This is a sample answer written to show how the site works. It follows the standard Hanafi books, but no mufti has reviewed or signed it yet, so it is not a fatwa. For a real answer, ask a question. Ask a mufti
1Short answer
Ghusl has three fard acts: rinsing the whole mouth, putting water into the nose up to the soft bone, and washing the entire body so that not a hair's breadth stays dry.
2Detailed answer
In the Hanafi school, ghusl has three fard acts:
- Rinsing the mouth so that water reaches every part of it, including between the teeth, unless fasting, when gargling is avoided.
- Putting water into both nostrils up to the soft bone.
- Washing the whole body: every part of the skin and every hair, including the navel, behind the ears, and under rings and earrings if water cannot reach otherwise.
If any part is left dry, the ghusl is not complete. The sunnah way also includes washing the hands and private parts first, removing any impurity, making wudu, and then pouring water over the body three times.

Arabic texts, translations and how the ruling was derived
وإن كنتم جنبا فاطهروا
Meaning: And if you are in a state of janabah, purify yourselves fully.
The verse orders a complete purification. The fuqaha explain this as washing everything that can be washed without hardship, which is why the inside of the mouth and nose are included in ghusl, unlike in wudu.
