Does bleeding from a small cut break wudu?
The question as asked, details removedI cut my finger after making wudu and a little blood came out. Do I need to make wudu again?More
This is a sample answer written to show how the site works. It follows the standard Hanafi books, but no mufti has reviewed or signed it yet, so it is not a fatwa. For a real answer, ask a question. Ask a mufti
1Short answer
Only if the blood flows beyond the place where it appeared. If it stays on the cut and does not spread, the wudu remains.
2Detailed answer
In the Hanafi school, blood, pus or fluid leaving the body breaks wudu only when it flows, meaning it spreads beyond the spot where it came out. So:
- If the blood flowed or spread beyond the cut, the wudu is broken.
- If a drop appeared and stayed on the cut without spreading, the wudu is not broken, even if you wiped it away.
- Blood that would have spread had it not been wiped or soaked up counts as flowing, and breaks wudu.
The same rule applies to a nosebleed, a pimple or a wound.
3Evidence and sources
- Al-Hidayah, chapter on what breaks wudu
- Radd al-Muhtar, Book of Purification
- Bahar-e-Shariat, chapter on what breaks wudu
Arabic texts, translations and how the ruling was derived
الوضوء من كل دم سائل
Meaning: Wudu is required for all flowing blood.
The Hanafi scholars rely on narrations that tie the breaking of wudu to blood that flows. Blood that does not move from its place has not "come out" in the Shariah sense, so it does not break wudu.
