Can two prayers be combined, for example Zuhr and Asr?
The question as asked, details removedWhen I'm busy at work or travelling, can I pray Zuhr and Asr together, or Maghrib and Isha?More
This is a sample answer written to show how the site works. It follows the standard Hanafi books, but no mufti has reviewed or signed it yet, so it is not a fatwa. For a real answer, ask a question. Ask a mufti
1Short answer
In the Hanafi school, no. Each prayer must be prayed in its own time. The only exceptions are at Arafah and Muzdalifah during Hajj. A traveller may pray Zuhr at the end of its time and Asr at the start of its time, which looks like combining but keeps each prayer in its own time.
2Detailed answer
Each of the five prayers has a fixed time, and praying it before its time is not valid, while delaying it past its time without excuse is a sin. So in the Hanafi school:
- Combining two prayers in the time of one is not allowed at home or on a journey.
- The only exceptions are during Hajj: Zuhr and Asr together in Zuhr's time at Arafah, and Maghrib and Isha together in Isha's time at Muzdalifah.
- What is allowed, especially on a journey, is to pray Zuhr late in its time and Asr early in its time, one after the other. Each prayer is still in its own time.
The narrations that describe the Prophet ﷺ joining prayers on journeys are understood by the Hanafi scholars in this last sense. If work makes a prayer time difficult, take a few minutes for it within its time; most employers allow this when asked.

Meaning: Indeed, prayer is prescribed for the believers at fixed times.
Meaning: I never saw the Prophet ﷺ pray a prayer outside its time except two: he joined Maghrib and Isha, and prayed Fajr earlier than its usual time.
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud is describing Muzdalifah during Hajj. He was always with the Prophet ﷺ, so his statement shows that combining in one time was done only there.
