The question as asked, details removedWhich acts of Hajj are fard, so that the Hajj is invalid without them?More
This is a sample answer written to show how the site works. It follows the standard Hanafi books, but no mufti has reviewed or signed it yet, so it is not a fatwa. For a real answer, ask a question. Ask a mufti
1Short answer
Hajj has three fard acts: the ihram, standing at Arafah (wuquf) on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, and the Tawaf al-Ziyarah. Missing any of them invalidates the Hajj. Missing a wajib act, such as the stay at Muzdalifah, the stoning or the sa'i, requires a dam (sacrifice) instead.
2Detailed answer
The three fard acts of Hajj are:
- Ihram: the intention of Hajj together with the talbiyah. It is a condition for the Hajj.
- Wuquf at Arafah: being present at Arafah for any part of the time from zawal on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah until dawn on the 10th.
- Tawaf al-Ziyarah: at least four of its seven rounds must be done on or after the 10th.
If any of these is missed, the Hajj is not valid and cannot be repaired by a sacrifice.
The wajib acts include staying at Muzdalifah, the sa'i between Safa and Marwah, stoning the jamarat, shaving or trimming the hair, the sacrifice for tamattu' and qiran, and the farewell tawaf for those from outside Makkah. Missing a wajib without a valid excuse requires a dam, but the Hajj stays valid.

Arabic texts, translations and how the ruling was derived
الحج عرفة
Meaning: Hajj is Arafah.
وليطوفوا بالبيت العتيق
Meaning: And let them circle the Ancient House.
The hadith makes Arafah the heart of Hajj, so missing it means missing the Hajj. The verse orders the tawaf after the sacrifice, which is the Tawaf al-Ziyarah.
