1Short answer

Hajj is fard once in a lifetime on an adult, sane Muslim who has the money for the journey and stay beyond their basic needs and the expenses of their dependants until they return, the health to travel, and a safe route. A woman also needs her husband or a mahram with her. Once fard, it should not be delayed.

2Detailed answer

Hajj becomes fard when these are present:

  1. Being Muslim, adult, sane and free.
  2. Having enough money for travel, stay and food for the Hajj, beyond one's basic needs (house, clothes, tools of work) and beyond what one's dependants need until one returns.
  3. Being healthy enough to travel.
  4. The route being reasonably safe.
  5. For a woman: having her husband or a mahram to travel with her, and not being in iddah.

It is fard once in a lifetime. In the Hanafi school, once Hajj becomes fard it should be performed in the first year possible; delaying it without reason is a sin, though it is still valid if performed later.

3Evidence and sources

  1. Qur'an, Al Imran 3:97
  2. Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj
  3. Bahar-e-Shariat, chapter on Hajj

Meaning: Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by people who are able to find a way there.

Meaning: A woman should not travel for three days except with a mahram.

The verse ties the obligation to ability. When asked whether Hajj is every year, the Prophet ﷺ answered that if he said yes it would become so, showing it is once in a lifetime. The hadith on travel sets the condition of a mahram for women.
