1Short answer

Zakat is 2.5% of gold, silver, cash, bank balances, trade goods and money owed to you that you expect to recover. There is no zakat on the house you live in, your car for personal use, furniture, clothes, or the tools of your work.

2Detailed answer

Zakat is one-fortieth (2.5%) of the zakatable wealth owned at the end of the year:

  1. Gold and silver, in any form, at their current selling value.
  2. Cash at home and money in bank accounts.
  3. Trade goods: anything bought with the intention of selling it, at its current market value.
  4. Money lent to others that you expect to get back.

There is no zakat on:

  1. The house you live in, even if it is large.
  2. A car, phone or computer for personal use.
  3. Household furniture, clothes and utensils.
  4. Tools, machines and premises used to earn a living.
  5. Property kept for rent: zakat is due only on the rent money that is saved.

3Evidence and sources

  1. Qur'an, At-Tawbah 9:34
  2. Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Zakat
  3. Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Zakat
  4. Bahar-e-Shariat, chapter on zakat

Meaning: Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah, give them news of a painful punishment.

Meaning: A Muslim owes no zakat on his slave or his horse.

The verse makes zakat due on gold and silver. The hadith exempts things kept for personal use, and Sayyiduna Samurah reports that the Prophet ﷺ told them to pay zakat on goods kept for sale.
